Doyle said that the managemenftof Detroit-based GM, which Monday filee for Chapter 11 reorganization, has publicly confirmed that the now-shuttered Janesville plantr is one of three plants beinhg considered to manufacture small cars in the future. The Janesvillr plant had more than 1,2090 employees who assembled pickup trucks and vehicles for which demanr has plummeted during the recenrt era of highgas prices.
The governord also said that Chrysler's 850-employee engine plant in Kenosha, whichy is slated to be closed undeethat automaker's reorganization unded bankruptcy, won't be sold, leaving the possibility that Chrysler's new partner, the Italiab auto manufacturer Fiat, could acquire the plant. Fiat is expectedr to begin producing cars in the Unitedx States under its partnershi withAuburn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler. Doyle said in a statementr that his administration will focua on making those possibilitiesaa reality.
