Consumer confidence falls in June - South Florida Business Journal:

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index droppexdto 49.3, compared to 54.8 in May, the most recentt evidence that the economy continues to struggle. Consumer spendingv accounts forabout two-thirds of the economy in the Unitedd States, making a declinse in consumer confidence a worry from Main Street to Wall The Dow Jones industrial average was down 112 points to 8,4187 in midday trading Tuesday. Consumers are downbeatt when it comes tothe short- and long-term outlooki with the recession. The Present Situation Index — how do you feel today — droppedr to 24.8 this month, from 29.7 in May.
And consumerws are glum about the nextsix months, with the Expectationss Index falling to 65.5, from 71.5 in May. The Presenrt Situation Index declinewas “caused by a less favorablw assessment of business conditions and employment, (and) continuesa to imply that economic conditions, whil not as weak as earlier this year, are nonetheleses weak,” director Lynn Franco said in a news releases Tuesday. Consumer confidence plummeted toa record-low 25.3 in February. The economyh has strong growth when the indexreaches 100. The Conference Board contacts 5,000 households for the monthly index.
